Vernon Arms

Liverpool. The building dates back to 1820, with the facade being renovated around 1900. The exterior features a classic Tetley lantern hanging above the corner door, and three etched glass windows promoting the Liverpool Brewing Company. The interior features a classic sloping floor, wood paneling, and a decorative plasterwork ceiling supported by historic iron columns with decorative capitals. A disused entrance along Vernon Street reveals colorful floor to ceiling Victorian Minton tiling. The long bar area branches off into three distinct drinking spaces, including a private snug.

During the turbulent political climate of the 1980s, the pub became legendary as the unofficial headquarters of Liverpool's local government. It was the favorite watering hole of deputy council leader Derek Hatto and the city's Militant Tendency faction, and was dubbed the "Politburo".

Lots of good beers to choose from, including the Rev James from S.A. Brain in Wales (my favorite when I am there). But I chose another favorite, Citra IPA from Oakham Ales up in Peterborough (those who know me know this is one of my favorite hops).

A nice new stop for me in Liverpool, located between the "Ship and Mitre" and "Ye Hole in Ye Wall". Makes for a great Liverpool pub crawl.
