The Unicorn
Ambleside, Cumbria. Ambleside is a bustling market town and tourist hub located at the northern head of Windermere, Englands largest natural lake. The Unicorn is the oldest traditional pub in town, tracing its origins back to the 1450s. Located on North Road - which served as the original coaching road through town - the inn has spent over half a millennium welcoming weary travelers, locals, and walkers exploring the Lake District fells. Outside there is a picturesque little stream running next to the pub. Officially registered as an inn since 1692, it retains much of its classical architectural history, including original low oak beams, exposed traditional Cumbrian stone walls, and log burning fireplaces. Lots of local artwork and memorabilia adorn the walls, and the ceilings are gorgeous. There are numerous rooms throughout, from small snugs to larger dining areas. The lovely bartender (Eve) provided me with a wealth of information about the area.
A Robinsons pub, there were a couple of their regular beers on tap - Dizzy Blonde Amarillo Pale and Cascade IPA. But I tried two that they brew for the pub - Unicorn Golden Ale and Throwback Five Hop English Bitter. Of course being the hophead that I am, the Throwback was my favorite.
