Cardiff. Built in the 19th century when this area of land was drained, as previously the River Taff came up to the Golate. Originally it formed the rear of the now defunct Queens Hotel on St. Mary Street. In the 1990s it was briefly renamed the Flyhalf and Firkin. "Vaults" refers to it being a workingman's bar as opposed to a more upmarket "smoke room" or "lounge".

This is a huge pub located in the city centre of Cardiff. It has kind of an open plan but there are many separate areas to choose from. The large back room has pool tables and as you can see from the photo there is a lot of rugby memorabilia. The front room has a more cozy feel and I think feels a bit more like a traditional pub. There are two beautiful bars, one to serve each area. It is owned by JW Bassett, and like JW Wetherspoons they are pub owners and not brewers, so there are beers from several breweries available. I enjoyed a Double Dragon from Felinfoil of Llanelli, Wales' oldest brewery (1878). Very tasty.
