Brighton. Established in 1545 and lays claim to being the oldest pub in town. The original landlord, Derrick Carver, was burnt as a martyr for his religious beliefs. Jack the Ripper suspect Robert Donston Stephenson is said to have stayed upstairs where he planned his notorious crimes, then travelled between London and the south coast to evade authorities. Author Graham Greene immortalized The Cricketers in his book "Brighton Rock". Patrons are welcomed into a classic Victorian pub with a beautiful curved bar, lots of velvet and red tin ceilings in the front rooms. On the side is a large spacious room leading to a smaller back room decorated with cricket memorabilia. And of course lots of wood beams everywhere. It was nice to enjoy a Sussex Best from Harvey's Brewery in nearby Lewes and relax in such luxurious surroundings.
