York. Built around 1600 the building was used for a variety of uses including as a warehouse. When many of York's church towers were being renovated the bells from these towers were stored in the warehouse for safe keeping. When the warehouse was converted to a pub in 1798 it was named The Blue Bell. It was refurbished in 1903 and the interior has changed little since. It is regarded as York's smallest pub, and is made up of 2 small rooms separated by a small bar and a corridor running next to the bar. Until the 1980's working men were served in the front room and gentlemen and their wives were served in the back. There is a hatch in the corridor with one chair that served single women and widowers. The pub has several rules including no swearing and no mobile phones (so unfortunately I have no photos of the beautiful interior).
