Bristol. The building dates back to the 1500s and is first referenced as a pub in 1694 when John Hawkins bought it and established the Georges Brewery. The name seven stars refers to the constellation Ursa major. It is internationally significant because of its role in the abolition movement. Thomas Clarkson, a a founder of the anti-slavery movement visited the pub in 1787 and with the help of the landlord William Thompson, gathered evidence of Bristol's "honourable trade" of slaves. His research helped change public opinion about the slave trade and the plight of British sailors and enslaved Africans. This led to the abolition of the slave trade in 1807 and of slavery in the British Empire in 1833. I had three delicious beers here: Revival Hoppy Copper Ale from Clearwater Brewery in Bideford, Sheriff Fatman American Amber Ale (brewed with Chinook, Columbus, Comet and Amarillo hops) from Twisted Oak Brewery in Wrington, and Twin Falls Pale Ale (brewed with Chinook, Green Bullet, and Cascade hops) from Small World Beers in West Yorkshire.
