Bretforten (population approx. 1,200), Evesham, West Midlands. A half-timbered medieval longhouse built in the 15th century by a farmer named Byrd that became a pub in 1848. It was owned by the same family until 1977 when Lola Taplin bequeathed it to the National Trust. A straw owl perched on the thatched barn roof pays tribute to her wish to return as an owl to keep a watchful eye on the inn.

The original brewing equipment is on display above the fireplace in the old brewhouse. In front of this fireplace and the one in the next room are chalked "witch circles" to prevent witches from entering through the chimneys. Three cozy rooms surround the small central bar. With it's original Victorian furnishings (including two "settles" - high backed benches usually placed near fireplaces), low dark wood ceiling beams, and countless plates, tankards, paintings and photographs adorning the walls, the inn exudes an atmosphere rich with stories of times gone by. It is rumored to have inspired the Prancing Pony Inn in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. It contains a significant collection of 17th century pewter ware, including a dinner service that supposedly belonged to Oliver Cromwell that was exchanged on the way to the Battle of Worcester. It is a hub for traditional folk music and morris dancing, and serves as the starting point for the annual Vale of Evesham Asparagas Festival. Outside is a massive area with many types of seating available surrounding a 16th century barn and an apple orchard. I sat underneath an apple tree and enjoyed a delicious Pyoneer Amber Ale from Wye Valley Brewery. And the food is fabulous! The most delicious steak and ale pie I have ever had! This is a first class country pub, and if you are ever in the West Midlands I highly recommend a visit.
