Wortegem-Petegem, Belgium. This is pub that I am so fortunate to have visited. Were it not for my Belgian family I never would have had this fabulous experience. After a lovely lunch with the family and visiting the nearby Flanders Field American Cemetery in Weregem (where the kind attendant allowed us to go into the chapel), we arrived at this little gem of a pub. An agricultural distillery dating back to 1752, some say that it is where the origins of Wortegem lemon jenever lie. The owner/manager/brewer Gijs Dewilde is a dentist during the week and a wonderful host at this slice of beer heaven on the weekends. Upon entering, a cozy room welcomes you, and it was packed - this is definitely the place to be for the locals of all ages. There is a small room off to the side (filled with dozens of jugs from various Belgian breweries that were used by the brewers to bring flowers to their wives/lady friends), a room opposite the small bar, and another small room in the back. Outside behind the main building is a separate building decorated with more jugs, glasses, mugs, and all kinds of other beer memorabilia, and fantastic outdoor seating area under an old chestnut tree. And the beers - wow! Bottles (I believe about 200) from many great Belgian and French breweries, including the Trappist monastery Westvelteren, which is not seen often. Outside we shared a bottle of Anosteke from Brasserie du Pays Flamand in Merville France, a delicious strong blonde ale that won a gold award in the 2022 World Beer Cup. Then inside to the main room to enjoy the house beer Wildebras, a fantastic full bodied darkish blonde ale brewed with four varieties of hops from nearby Poperingse, giving it a great fruity and citrusy aroma. This was the culmination of a delightful day in Flanders (I hope I got most of this information correct - almost all by word of mouth and much Flemish!).
