Newcastle upon Tyne. So usually when I do a pub crawl I research the oldest pubs in a village/town/city and roughly map out my journey. But often during my walk I will happen upon a pub (or pubs) that look like they are worth a visit. Such is the case with the Beehive. Seeing the beautiful green and yellow glazed tiles exterior beckoned my to go inside. Located at the top of the Bigg Market, the first mention of the Beehive dates back to 1778. It was rebuilt in 1902 by Joseph Oswald & Son, the regular local architects for Newcastle Breweries. Inside is a beautiful traditional long dark wood bar, and the green ceilings with their ornate crown moulding continue the motif of the exterior. There is seating at the windows opposite the bar, and small rooms on each side of the bar (one featuring stained glass windows on the doors and a beehive presentation enclosed in glass). This is truly a gathering place for locals, and I was surrounded by patrons speaking in a very pronounced Geordie dialect. I settled down at the window with a Golden Hive Session Golden Ale from from nearby Wylam Brewing and tried to pick out as many words as possible in the conversations going on around me - probably about 1 in 10!
