Dublin. Licensed in 1766. In the 1860s it served as a clandestine meeting place and recruiting place for the Finians, a 19th century secret republican organization. The exterior features a red and white canopy with red bricks, The interior features deep red ceilings, ornate gold leaf accents, handcrafted woodwork, and a gleaming gilded bar counter backed by baroque mirrors. The walls are decorated with historical prints including engravings depicting the dealings of Russian Emperor Paul I , alongside classic prints of Gainsborough ladies. Up until 1951 the main bar was for men only. Female patrons were seated in the narrow hallway and we're served through small wooden hatches. Over the decades the pub has welcomed many favorite actors and musicians including Bruce Springsteen (he a!ways makes an appearance when he is in town), Rihanna, and U2.
