Beesands, Kingsbridge, Devon. This is a pub you really have to want to go to. After turning off of the A379 (the main road, which itself has some sections that are too narrow for 2 way traffic) you travel down about 4 miles of narrow one lane roads known locally as "rat runs". Most of these have a turnoff area every 100 yards or so that allow for two way travel. But the last mile hardly even has these. But after arriving at the sea, it is a short drive along the South West Coast Path and you arrive at the Cricket. Overlooking Start Bay,the pub was established in 1867 by Phillip Prettejohn who bought the property in 1857 after the Beerhouse Act of 1830. The name was inspired by a cricket match held between the Kingsbridge and Start Bay cricket teams which took place on the nearby green on the day of the pub's opening. In July 1942 a German bomb severely damaged the pub, and it has survived several major storms over the years ( the night after I visited a part of the A379 east of the pub was washed away during a storm!). Keith Richards' family regularly spent holidays in Beesands in the 1950s, and he and Mick Jagger played their first public set at the pub. It is a lovely family pub with plenty of seating surrounding the central bar, and lots of tables outside next to the seawall. I was happy to find a beer from Salcombe Brewery ( located about 1 mile from where we are staying outside of Kingsbridge) that I had not seen before - Lifesaver, a delicious Amber Ale. I would usually opt for outdoor seating, but as it was about 45 degrees and the wind was blowing 20+ mph I decided that staying inside and warm was a better idea.
